Opt-Out/Waiver

F-1 students health insurance is mandatory and provided by the university. Students will be covered automatically during their semester of enrollment and charged accordingly. J-1 Exchange, Government Sponsored and students employed and covered by a US insurance policy have the option to waive the university provided insurance if eligible. A copy of the insurance policy coverages must be provided to the Office of International Students & Scholars for review. The University-provided insurance policy through Aetna Student Health, managed by Academic HealthPlans, is designed as an accident and sickness policy that is affordable to students. There are certain limitations and restrictions of this policy which you can review by reading the benefits summary.

If you do not want the Student Health Insurance Plan and meet the above criteria, you must decline or opt-out of coverage by submitting a waiver. You may only opt-out of coverage during the following Waiver Periods:

All waivers must be submitted by 11:59 PM on the published waiver deadline to be considered.

Fall Semester - 07/01/2024 - 09/09/2024
Spring/Summer Semester - 11/04/2024 - 02/08/2025

To qualify for a waiver, your health insurance plan must meet the requirements as listed below.

Only students who are covered by a US policy through their US employers, spouse/domestic partner`s US employer or parent`s US employer are eligible to submit a health insurance waiver for consideration. All other plans are not eligible for a health insurance waiver.

  1. Provide Primary and Emergency Care within 125 miles of the main UNR campus.
  2. Pay 80% or greater for Inpatient Hospitalization.
  3. Pay 80% or greater for Inpatient and Outpatient Mental Health benefits.
  4. Provide Prescription Medication coverage.
  5. Have a yearly, individual deductible of $500 or less.
  6. Must not have a Lifetime Maximum amount.
  7. Your plan must be owned and headquartered in the United States.
  8. Must have Medical Evacuation coverage of $100,000 or more.
  9. Must have Repatriation coverage of $25,000 or more.

If your private health insurance plan meets the criteria you are eligible to apply for a waiver of the UNR Student Health Insurance Plan. Have the following information ready before you begin your waiver application.

  • Your medical ID card
  • Full Policy Document
  • Your UNR ID number
